Chapter 47 Outline

  1. Human Biology

A. The Body’s Defense

1. Nonspecific Defenses

a. Identifying Pathogens

Pathogen: an agent that causes disease.

Koch’s posrulates: rules that a disease must follow

b. First line of Defense: Barriers

Mucous membranes: tissues that protect the interior surfaces

c. Second Line of Defense: Nonspecific Immunity

Inflammatory response:  a series of events to protect the body

Histamine: substance that increases blood flow

Phagocytes:  cells that engulf foreign matter

Neutrophil:  most aboundant type of phagocyte in the body

Macrophage: non movable cells that destroy bacteria

Natural killer cells: cells that kill infected cells

Interferon:  protein that is realesed by infected cells

2. Specific Defenses: The Immune System

a. The Immune System

Immune system: cells and tissue that protect the body

  Lymphocytes: white blood cells

  Spleen: Stores heathy blood cells

B cells:  Made it the bone marrow

T cells: Made in the bone marrow but end in the thymus

b. Recognizing Pathogens

Antigen: substance the immune system can fight

c. Immune Response

Helper T cell:  cell that can destroy objects

Cell-mediated immune response:  Response that attacks infected cells

Cytoxic T cells: cells that destroy infected cells

Plasma cells:  cells that make a killer protien

Antibody: substance that bonds to a substance

Memory cells: cells that are stored for memory

d. Immunity and Vaccination

Immunity: the ability to resist disease

Vaaccination: a small amout of disease

e. Problems of the immune System

Allergy: a physical response to an atigen

  Asthma: constricting of the lungs

Autoimmune disease: when the immune system attacks itself

3. HIV and AIDS

a. The Course of HIV infection

  HIV:  Human immunodeficiency virus

Opportunishic infections: diseases weaken the immune system
